Ryan Michael Coulson: “I was incarcerated on January 12, 2012, for a first-degree robbery that I was guilty of. However, I was forced to waive my case to the adult court and was sucked into a system where I discovered reformation was not on the agenda. I decided to make a difference through poetry and by studying to be a paralegal. I have been able to succeed in this system through faith and hard work. My course began when I became a student of NJStep, which is a program that provides college to those who are incarcerated, and also when I became an advocate of NJPC, a coalition of youth, parents, and lawyers fighting for juvenile reformation—‘because the consequences aren’t minor.’ I will obtain my AA degree in 2017 and also will become a certified paralegal. I believe to reform a system you must understand the system; to truly understand a system and the people it impacts, you must be ‘one of them.’ This is work I have started while ‘behind the wall’ and will continue outside in 2020.”
